Pictures of Working Dogs
The beauty of working dogs.
What better than to sit in your armchair in front of the fire on a warm evening, admiring the beautiful pictures adorning your living room walls - of dogs at work in all weathers? Nothing is going to make you feel more cosy than the thought of a hill farmer or a gamekeeper out in the rain and snow with his working dogs!
The best pictures of working dogs are painted or drawn by people who are totally wrapped up in working dogs. You have to have been out there in driving rain, your feet freezing in your wellington boots, coming home in the car with your windows all steamed up from your wet and muddy dog, to be able to put life into the paintings the way these artists can.
I've spent many happy hours finding places for you to see a whole range of beautiful prints, and I've picked out a few of working dogs to give you an idea of what you'll find. Just click on the pictures and you'll get taken straight to
The Gallery,
where you can look at pictures of your favourite breeds, be they working dogs, toy dogs, or standard armchair pooches.
And while you're there, you can choose to look at Prints, original Paintings, or stock up on very unusual and attractive Greetings Cards, so you're never lost for a card for a special occasion.
The Shepherd on the Hill
This is one of my favourite pictures of working dogs - albeit not working at this very momen - by a terrifically gifted animal painter. It's Mick Cawston's "The Guardians". You can really feel the damp of the moors and smell the heather as the Shepherd takes a rest with his loyal companions - just savouring the beauty of his workplace.
The Gamekeeper's Terrier
The resilience, the grit, the eagerness and the independent spirit of the Jack Russell are all beautifully caught in this lively print by John Trickett.
Shooting over Dogs
If I know my Golden Retrievers, this dog has just spotted a) a tennis ball, or b) a muddy puddle - or perhaps (bliss!) both at once! Or maybe he's just spent a wonderful day in the field with his master, other dogs and guns, and is just full of himself. Either way, it's a beautiful portrait of a splendid Golden Retriever - one of the most popular working dogs.
And to round up this selection of pictures of Working Dogs, here is a lovely composite of three Flatcoat Retrievers. Mick Cawston has really captured the freshness and excitement, and the great beauty of their life.
