Whippet

Many people see the Whippet as a hard racing dog, lean and possibly dangerous. Oh dear! How wrong can you be? Whippets are used for racing, and their speed and agility is stunning. But hard they are not, nor are they usually dangerous.

On the contrary, the Whippet is one of the most affectionate breeds of dog. Naturally shy and quiet, they are devoted to their owners. They like nothing more than food and comfort, and will happily spend many hours curled up on the sofa, and see it is their proper place in life to share your bed. A slogan of the Whippet owner could well be "You'll never sleep alone again!"

The Whippet's coat is fine and doesn't tend to leave itself all over your furniture or clothes. But this means that he'll need a warm coat in cold weather, and in many climates must be kept in the house at night.

Getting on very well with cats and other dogs - anyone who will play with them and cuddle up to them, in fact - the Whippet is small, takes up very little space, needs little grooming, and will eat anything momentarily unattended or that doesn't fight back. In other words this angelic creature is an out-and-out thief ... but only when your back is turned! Unlike cats, he won't actually snatch the food off your fork.

One of the joys of having a Whippet is observing the elegant shapes they drape themselves into, looking into those deep and beautiful eyes, and watching his awe-inspiring bursts of speed .. when he feels like it. BJC
