The Weimaraner

The Weimaraner simply doesn't take second place to any other dog. In fact he regards himself as another family member, demanding your attention most of the time. You have to make time for them - even as a young puppy they need lots of attention.

The more you put in to your Weimaraner by way of early socialisation and training the better-behaved a dog you will have when adult. Socialisation is of prime importance in all environments and situations - other dogs, people, children, and even traffic. Take them everywhere with you once they have their inoculations.

Weimaraners love to be hugged and cuddled, and to snuggle up to you. I don't know any Weimaraner who doesn't like to stand up on his back legs and put his "arms" round your neck! They're affectionate, loyal, and obedient, that is once you establish who's boss. A kind, firm approach is the order of the day.

Although the Weimaraner is a gundog it does also have a protective instinct and it's important to remember this. They're very receptive to learning and once taught an exercise they enjoy pleasing you.

One thing to consider about the Weimaraner is that they have very lively minds and need activities that will stimulate them. If they're not kept occupied they can become bored and destructive.

And they do need regular exercise - either free running or long walks. They're natural retrievers, and playing ball games gets in lots of exercise for them with less mileage for the human - which is a bonus given their stamina and energy.

I've had Weimaraners for 18 years and would not wish to own another breed!
