Dog Gifts - for Dogs, about Dogs, and from Dogs
Gifts from dogs? Well, why not let them in on the spirit of giving dog gifts? It'll give pleasure to someone, even if it's only the younger members of the family (or perhaps just the younger-minded!)
Dog owners are the easiest people to buy presents for, so dog gifts are always popular. If you have a dog, you could probably do with a new collar for him.
It's always useful to have another dog lead
- for the car, or when you can't find which pocket your usual one is in. There are quantities of marvellous dog toys to fit every pocket - financially as well as physically!
And there are some spectacular toys specially for ball-freaks (dogs or people). When it comes to throwing things for dogs, there is a huge choice. Balls, balls on ropes, balls you can fire long distances, balls to kick, and balls to play tug-of-war with. Check out some of my favourites here.
Then there are the frisbees! Frisbees come specially made for dogs. In the dog's eyes that statement is self-evident - all Frisbees are for dogs! But, to save the aerodynamically unsound tooth-holes in your children's frisbees, get one specially for your dog. You can get soft rubbery ones, and some made with very tough nylon fabric, so you can play tug-of-war with them without lacerating your dog's mouth or losing a finger.
The wonderful thing about these doggy frisbees is that they float! You can "float" them in the air too. They're so light that when you throw them crosswind they'll hang in the air over your dogs while they wait eagerly beneath for them to come down.
If you enjoy the sight of your athletic dog jumping, you'll love seeing him leap through the air to snatch a frisbee out of the sky!
You can find my favourite frisbee here, they roll up into a pocket and make great dog gifts.
Doggy gifts for doggy people
Now you've got Fido's stocking sorted, you can get something for his owner. You can go for sensible, waterproof clothing - in my climate at any rate these are essential pieces of dog-kit! There are warm woolly hats, tough gloves, and thick socks for wearing inside boots, which would all make very welcome dog gifts. Or you can go for a useful indoor item.
Coffee cups with good dog pictures are enormously popular dog gifts with dog-owners, especially if you can get one with their dog breed on. I have a couple of Border Collie mugs brought back from a visit to Crufts and for years they've given us great pleasure in their daily use. One of the collies looks like Tip (seen herding balls, chickens etc round Dog-Training-and-Health.com) and the other is the image of our cover-boy Jake. As I said, the dog pictures need to be good,
so take a look at these brilliant dog gifts
There's a very wide choice - most breeds are represented.
And while you're there you'll get some ideas about other dog gifts. There are ... breed-specific address labels,
figurines, photo frames,
mouse pads, and some gorgeous large glove puppets, in lots of different breeds,
as well as T-shirts and sweatshirts, for those who like to show off their dog even when he's not there. My very favourite t-shirt is of a dog-owner's daily timetable, and reads "Let Max out ... Let Max in ... Let Max out ..." !
For those who'd rather gaze at an active dog on their wall, while their own dog sleeps beneath - or perhaps a dozing dog on the wall, while their hyperactive dog plays ball outside, dog pictures make wonderful dog gifts. I've found some beautiful prints for you - just go to our Dog Pictures page to get an idea of what's available.
Again - almost every breed is catered for, but double-check first. You don't want to give a picture of a yellow Labrador to the owner of a Golden Retriever, or a Rough Collie print to a shepherd! If you don't want to purchase a print for your friend at the moment, you can send them an e-card of their favourite breed - that will be so welcome!
And for something less formal but always acceptable and useful, these Calendars are good dog gifts. Click on this image and you'll get to see loads of them.
The Ultimate in Dog Gifts
The ultimate in dog gifts has to be ... a dog. As we all know "A dog is for life, not just for Christmas", and getting a new puppy at Christmas is not the best idea for even the doggiest of homes. There's simply too much excitement around - even without young children! - and far too much rich and unsuitable food which will end up in the dog, as everyone gets caught up in the spirit of Christmas giving.
After Christmas is a good time to pick up perfectly nice puppies who have been given as presents ... and booted out shortly after. But if you're buying from a reputable breeder, you will have trouble finding a pup at all at this time, as the breeders time matings carefully to avoid their precious pups ending up as unwanted dog gifts.
But if you still want to go ahead, be sure that one of the dog gifts you choose is
this first-class book on rearing the perfect puppy.
I would recommend this book to anyone starting off with a new puppy - even if it's their fifth! There is so much sensible information here - especially about socialising your new pup, that I would rate it as one of those dog gifts that is always welcome.
